How to Use the Roof Calculator

Disclaimer: This calculator provides an estimate for roofing area and cost based on the inputs you provide. Results may vary based on specific building conditions, local regulations, and material types. It is recommended to consult with a professional for precise measurements and quotes.

This calculator helps you determine the total roof area and an optional cost based on the roof’s dimensions, pitch, and additional details. Follow these steps to use it effectively:

  1. House Length (meters):

    • Enter the length of the house in meters (from one end to the other).
  2. House Width (meters):

    • Enter the width of the house in meters (from front to back).
  3. Roof Pitch (degrees):

    • Enter the roof pitch in degrees. This is the angle of the roof’s slope. You can use a pitch conversion table to find the degree for your specific pitch (e.g., 6/12 = 26.6°).
  4. Eaves Overhang (meters):

    • Input the length of the eaves overhang in meters. If your roof doesn’t have an overhang, you can leave this at 0.
  5. Cost per Square Meter (optional):

    • If you want to calculate the estimated cost, enter the cost per square meter of roofing material. If left blank, the calculator will only return the area.
  6. Click ‘Calculate’:

    • After filling in the necessary details, press the button to compute the total roof area and cost (if applicable).

The result will show:

  • Base Area of House: The area without the roof pitch or eaves.
  • Total Roof Area: The area considering the roof pitch and overhang.
  • Total Cost: If a cost per square meter is provided, it will calculate the total expense.

How to Get the Area of Your Roof

To estimate the material and labor costs of roofing, you first need to determine the total area of the roof.

Steps to Measure Roof Area:

  1. Measure the Length and Width of Your Home:
    • Measure the length and width of the base of your home. If you have a rectangular house, this is straightforward.
  2. Determine the Roof Slope (Pitch):
    • The roof pitch (angle) impacts the actual roof surface area. We’ll cover this in the next section.
  3. Calculate the Base Area:
    • Multiply the length by the width to get the base area of your roof.
  4. Adjust for Roof Pitch:
    • Multiply the base area by the roof pitch multiplier to account for the slope of your roof.

5. Account for Eaves Overhang:

    • Measure the overhang (see the next section) and add it to the roof dimensions for accuracy.

Example:

If your home is 10 meters long and 8 meters wide with a roof pitch of 25°, the base area is 10 x 8 = 80 sqm. Multiply that by the pitch multiplier (1.103), and the total roof area becomes 88.24 sqm.

How to Get Your Roof Pitch

Roof pitch (or slope) is the steepness of the roof. You need this information to calculate the roofing area and materials accurately.

Steps to Measure Roof Pitch:

  1. Find a Safe Spot on Your Roof or Use a Ladder:
    • Stand on a safe spot or use a ladder to access the edge of your roof.
  2. Measure the Horizontal Distance:
    • Using a tape measure, measure 12 inches (30 cm) horizontally from the roof’s surface.
  3. Measure the Vertical Rise:
    • From the 12-inch mark, measure the vertical distance (rise) to the roof surface.
  4. Calculate the Pitch Ratio:
    • The pitch is the ratio of rise to run. For example, if the rise is 6 inches, the pitch is 6:12 or simply 6/12.
  5. Convert to Degrees (Optional):
    • If you need the pitch in degrees, use this pitch-to-degree conversion table:

How To Get Eaves Overhang

Eaves Overhang refers to the section of the roof that extends beyond the walls of your house. It protects from rain and snow and can add aesthetic value to the home.

Steps to Measure Eaves Overhang:

  1. Measure from the Wall to the Roof Edge:
    • Using a tape measure, go outside and measure the distance from the wall to the edge of the roof. This is the overhang.
  2. Adjust for Overhang on Both Sides:
    • Roofs often have eaves on both sides, so account for both overhangs when calculating the total roof area.

Why Eaves Overhang is Important:

  • It affects the total surface area of the roof and requires extra materials.
  • The overhang helps protect the walls and foundation from water runoff.
